Summer Review

Submitted by Continuity Forum on Fri, 2006-11-03 10:12.News

Welcome

This is the briefing we provide an update on our activities and bring you more insight emerging or developing industry topics.

In this edition we have a range of what we hope you will find are interesting articles including a keynote article from the Head of the Civil Contingencies Secretariat, Bruce Mann explaining the critical importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors to enable effective BCM. Bruce looks at this dual responsibility from the perspective of the Civil Contingencies Act and illustrates how both sectors can work together to create continuity.

Connecting with this message Simon Creed of Bristol City Council outlines the work they have undertaken with the support of the Continuity Forum to promote BCM within their area. We are delighted that this team effort between the Bristol City Council and the Forum has proved very successfully and Simons article show what can be achieved and this has lead to expansion of the programme and more events aimed at helping Bristol ensure continuity.

Our next piece looks at the mental effects of a major incident with Mandy Rutter reviewing the impact of the London Bombings to illustrate the ‘invisible’ effects on people. Understanding the importance of these very human reactions is essential to restore ‘Business as Usual’ but is often overlooked completely.

Next our Policy and Development Director, John Sharp looks at IT dependency looking at the commonest cause of failure and what should be done to create better resilience for critical systems. This is followed by a brief critique by Russell Price on the Power Failures in London that made headline news in July as he ponders who was really responsible.

This is followed by a legal perspective from Sarah Turpin on Insurance and its potential limitations following an incident which highlights how important it is to connect the organisations BCM and Insurance planning.

We also bring more on our events and review the success of our ‘BC Basics’ workshop series which was held over July and August. The content, format and feedback proved that these sessions really hit the mark and we are pleased to say that we will be continuing this series regularly throughout the year

We also provide information on the the work of the BASEL Committee and their latest guidance covering 7 principles that should be followed by all financial organisations.

There is also a piece on why BCM is personal to us all from our Chairman, Russell Price, where he shows that failing to prepare impacts not just on business but on our those that are often the most reluctant to plan!

We are have a general update on both current and future Continuity Forum events and workshops and we’ll be taking a look at some of the unseen work of the Continuity Forum and putting a spotlight on some our services that make us your unrivalled partner. Of special note is a new series of Breakfast Briefing being held in Glasgow, Birmingham and London in October in association with IBM at some rather special venues!

There are details on how you can get your very own 'Continuity Forum' for your organisation and we show how Local and Public Sector groups can tap into our expertise and experience to help promote Business Continuity as required by the Civil Contingencies Act. We have even found space for a few ‘Top Jobs’ from the Website and a short piece on making BCM a strategic goal. There is also news on a new Industry Publication for our sector 'Journal of Business Continuity & Emergency Planning' from Henry Stewart Publications that promises to bring extensive articles and interesting content on a regular basis to subscribers.

We are pleased also to spotlighted two of our partners whose support is vital making our work possible. The Continuity Forum relies on sponsors like these to support our events programmes and industry development work. We would like to thank both MARSH and ICM for their ongoing support, helping us in creating Continuity and building Resilience.

As always we’d love your feedback on this briefing and we positively welcome your comments, submissions or ideas. Please click this LINK to tell us what you think.
