Community Continuity Event - Islington 29th June
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Continuity Forum is please to be supporting the London Borough of Camden through this special free event

Have you considered how your business would survive in an emergency?

The events of 7July 2005 dramatically showed that the capital is prone to unforeseen emergencies but everyday on London’s streets there are dozens of potential disasters that can affect businesses such as:

• burst water mains
• crime
• fires
• road closures

Businesses can subsequently suffer from:

• customers and staff who are unable to reach your premises
• power and water failures
• structural issues that lead to temporary closure

Real business experiences from across Islington

A local shop caught fire this March and was burned to the ground. One adjoining shop was also severely damaged in the blaze. Both shops remained closed over three months later.

Another adjoining business experienced smoke damage on the ground and first floors with heavy effects to their carpet and furniture.

“Our premises were closed for about four days, due to lack of power and telephone supplies.
Some of the impacts of the incident are still visible.”

In February last year a local restaurant was flooded due to a burst water main. The restaurant was forced to close for a month and their bar was shut for a further two months.
“The water was one inch on the ground floor and knee high in the basement. All 40 of our staff were asked to take paid leave while the restaurant was shut….Everything in the bar had to be replaced. The estimated loss of revenue, excluding costs for repairs and damages, was £100,000.”

The London Borough of Camden, with the support of the Continuity Forum, are organising free training in continuity planning for local business.

The next event will be held at the Jury’s Inn Hotel, 60 Pentonville Road, London,
N1 9LA on 29 June 2006. The training, including refreshments, runs from 6pm to 8pm. Speakers and presenters include professionals, planners and local business
people who have had direct experience of coping with emergencies.

Places are limited, and a high demand is expected, so please call now to book your place. Contact Sam Bridgman, Business Partnership Co-ordinator, on 020 7527 3185 or email sam.bridgman@islington.gov.uk
